Free Online Cooking Classes from Milk Street Cooking School

Christopher Kimball and Josh Momaday on set

Nothing tears at my heart more than to hear students say they will be glad when they get out of school so they can quit learning.  Learning is a lifelong endeavor. It is something we do our whole lives in one form or another.  It is something children do naturally from the moment they are born. Children learn more in the first three years of life than we can possibly measure. Everything is new and exciting for them. They soak up new things like little sponges. It is only when we are much older and have other pursuits tugging us in various directions that learning becomes a chore.

But, if we are to continue to grow and mature as adults, we must always be learning new things. For our jobs, to fulfill our household responsibilities, or for our own enjoyment, we are always learning something new. Learning keeps our minds alert and our lives interesting. If we are not learning, we become stagnant, and the vibrancy fades from our lives.

As Henry Ford so wisely observed,

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”

Or, Albert Einstein, who said,

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.”

With these thoughts in mind, I would like to periodically introduce you to opportunities for you to engage in continued learning. From time to time, I run across free learning resources that I feel are worth sharing. I recently discovered one such resource from Milk Street Cooking School in Boston.  Milk Street Cooking School’s staff has traveled the world in search of authentic dishes and cooking techniques from around the globe. They have brought these innovative ideas back to Boston, where they have adapted them to be used in a typical American kitchen with ingredients readily available to most home cooks. In fact, they propose the idea that ““You don’t need years of cooking school to become the best cook you know. All you need is $1, a skillet, a knife and a burner.” — Christopher Kimball, founder of Milk Street Cooking School. And many of their recipes require little more than that. (The dollar is for signing up for their $1 trial access to their paid content.)

Milk Street Cooking School offers a host of online classes on an amazing array of topics. I have not viewed any of the courses that require payment, but the free courses that I have enjoyed are exceptionally well done. I cannot imagine that the paid classes would be anything less. Each class provides a vast amount of learning materials. Professional quality videos, printable recipe booklets and class booklets, as well as additional online photos and text explaining every aspect of the topic being covered. Step by step photos and videos ensure that even a novice cook can successfully prepare a delicious meal. Just follow the link below to access the Milk Street Cooking School website. You will see a listing of their current online classes that are available on upcoming dates, but, if you scroll down past these, you will see their free online classes. There are several. My personal favorites were Milk Street Steakhouse and Flatbreads. Once you have enrolled in a class, you have permanent access to it. You can go back and watch it again and again, if you like. I have been cooking for many years, and I learned some new ideas from the classes I watched. If you are at all interested in cooking, I’m sure you will enjoy them, too.
