I Am Thankful For Boring Weekends and A Helpful Husband

imageFor my family, the weekends are not usually too exciting around our house and I am grateful for that. By the time we catch up on the never-ending pile of laundry, scrub the potties (my son hates that I still use that word), and clear the clutter from the week Saturday is gone in the blink of an eye. I do try to catch The Pioneer Woman on The Food Network every Saturday morning. I don’t cook much myself, but love keeping up with Ree and her whole family’s happenings on their ranch. The kids usually do things like watch some TV, jump on the trampoline, make dirt roads for their bikes in “the back forty” (the empty lots behind our house that my grandpa owns), build something on Minecraft, take care of their digital pets, or read a book. On Sunday, we attend church, eat out together with my parents and sister, and maybe get some shopping done while in town, although Gary and I like to save that chore for after work because our kids hate to shop. Some of you parents out there probably can relate to the thrill of simply grocery shopping without kids. It’s the little things in life for us around here.

Most of this weekend, my oldest and I mainly laid on the couch with iPad or TV remote in hand due to a stomach bug. It is always nice to get to lounge around for awhile, but I was sick of being sick and of lounging by the end of the weekend. It made me feel like a terrible mother for not doing much with my kids. It also didn’t allow me to get much housework accomplished. Although ironically I had cleaned the bathrooms right before we got hit with the digestive issues.

On Sunday, Gary went to work early and then to church, which is about 15 miles away, so I sent the little princess with my mom to church so she could still attend and wouldn’t have to sit around looking at us puny people all day. When Gary and Princess got home, he made Sick Boy something to eat because he was feeling better and had gained an appetite. After mentioning that the clothes that I had washed were now overflowing in the laundry basket, Gary spent the next half hour folding clothes on the dining room table. Then, he whipped up a tuna noodle casserole after I told him anything with “real” meat in it sounded terrible at the moment. I was reminded of how thankful I am that I married a man that knows how to cook and clean and will take care of us when we’re sick. I did manage to Lysol the bathrooms again and do the supper dishes so things began to look up by Sunday evening.

We even watched the movie Thor for the first time before bed. Besides not feeling well, cleaning and then recleaning my bathrooms, and spending way too much time on the couch, I had a good weekend. Now to make it through another week that includes not only work and school, but a kid’s baptism class at church, me staying late at work for Parent/Teacher conferences, and both my parents’ birthdays. Yes, I definitely love and need my boring weekends.
